Artificial Vitality

Paper Blossom

Artificial Vitality came to fruition in part because I’ve been intrigued for a while about the artistic potential of embroidery rings as structural pieces. While the rings and yarn adorning the piece are both part of an artistic medium infused with traditional vitality, I wanted the yarn’s uniform space-dyeing and placement to look uniform and artificial, and the rings’ rigid flares to look confining. This piece presents fabricated connectivity as a fragile façade over a dark, restrictive base.

Paper Blossom is made entirely from cardboard, paper bags, and scrap construction paper and is my personal ode to the artistic possibilities that can bloom from even the most mundane of things such as the humble paper bag.
