The Walls Are Soundproof
Celina Manji

The walls are soundproof
Is what she thinks
When she tells him she loves him
And that he’s amazing
When she professes her love to him
Over late night facetimes
Sneaking him in through the window
She thinks it’s a secret
But little does she know
That every moan and groan and grunt
Every time she calls out YES
HARDER FASTER DON'T STOP
Everytime she lets out her pleasure in wails and cries
I can hear.

The walls are soundproof
Is what she thinks
When he shoves her against that wall
Every punch he throws
Every slap across the face
Every swear every accusation
Every drunk and intoxicated word he spits out
Of his dirty filthy mouth
And when she pretends like nothing is wrong
Like the bruises that cover her body are normal
Like the black eyes and bloody noses
Are from her clumsy falls
Every ouch and ow she lets slip out of her
Beaten and swollen lips
I can hear.

The walls are soundproof
That's what she thinks
but i’m not dumb
I hear it all, I do what i have to
I see the cop cars ride in every night
hear them drag his sorry ass out of the house
I hear her telling him to never come home again
her weeping late into the night
about how she's never going back to him
About how she's done with the abuse
and the lies and cheats corruption to her soul
But i hear her footsteps
Early in the morning
Letting him slip back into the house
After he says his routine speech every morning
And she forgives him
I can hear.

The walls are soundproof
That’s what she thinks
But they’re paper thin
Weak and fragile like her
They have no defence against big strong things
But he knows that and he uses her
He makes her suffer because the truth is
Inside he’s hurting
He’s weak and dumb
No self control
He’s a fool jerk moron nitwit stupid wit duncestar
And i know it and so does she
But there’s nothing i can do
Because while i can hear her
She can't hear me.
