Visual Art by Nina Liu
Nina Liu, Spectral Screens, ink on paper, 14 x 20 in.
Spectral Screens symbolizes our society’s media addiction by incorporating various technological elements within the art piece, crafted from everyday school objects. The phones arranged as floor tiles suggest how contemporary technology captivates our attention despite the environment. Additionally, I aim to depict societal challenges by using authority (between teacher and students) in school settings as a metaphor. The teacher reflects issues beyond the classroom, and the students represent our society at large. The teacher’s desk—with a symbol of the Central Military Commission of the Workers’ Party of Korea embedded—and the lock on the curtains both further reinforce this concept. With multiple elements for the audience to analyze, Spectral Screens prompts a reflective state for viewers.
