Wasteland

Effie Li

Monotony lay flat on its back,

Pallid grey sky burdened by its weight,

Grace and heart it did lack,

Vast distinct decay.

And teeth and bone wrought from wreaths of smoke,

Circled stripped sun and bone bleached land.

Swelled blood burst from below the yoke,

Tied and strangled under the loving hand.

And the ground opened its bloody maw,

Gums and teeth as far as the eye could see.

The cardinal caught in the opened jaw,

Past the tongue and past the teeth,

Closing in on dead debris.
