history

Effie Li

And we have made something better-

 - towers and kingdoms built on broken spines-

- far greater than what the giants of our past could dream, and on their ashes we-

-straighten their backs and the whole thing falls, falls far far below. It crumples if we remove what is beneath yet we must-

- dance and celebrate the victories of which they could not imagine. The past is the past. Break the self imposed chains that leash us to a unbreakable history, break the chains to-

- free ourselves from our sins. We cannot forget those who have brought us here, as we drag ourselves over the steps they carved, we cannot-

-build something upon the ashes of the broken and the ruined. What happened before us was flawed beyond fixing-

-separate from our obligate now

This began as a creative piece on Macbeth and ended as a poem on the nature of history and our role in preserving it
